✨Giant Leaps Keep Coming✨
Postpartum Depression Pill 💊, Fall Climb Events 🍁, 7 PMH-Cs 🫨 and more!!
FDA Approves 1st Oral Medication for Postpartum Depression
Zuranolone, was previously available as an IV given over the course of 60 hours in an inpatient setting, thereby creating a hurdle that was difficult for many patients to overcome. This new formulation is taken orally over the course of 2 weeks with much less risk of side effects than the previous version.
Both are versions of allopregnenolone, a naturally occurring neurosteroid which is made in the body from the hormone progesterone, which plummets after delivery. This medication is not yet available and, as with most medications, may be cost-prohibitive for many initially and cannot be used in pregnancy or lactation. This will provide another option to those requiring medication for severe postpartum depression who have not responded to traditional anti-depressants and psychotherapy.
